Living in Bellingham is pretty great — until your furnace decides to quit on a February morning, your pipes freeze during the first cold snap, or you flip a breaker and suddenly half your house goes dark. If you’ve lived here long enough, you know that moment of panic followed by the frantic search for someone trustworthy to call.
The problem isn’t finding a contractor in Bellingham. It’s knowing who to actually trust — who shows up when they say they will, who won’t quote you one price and bill you another, and who actually knows what they’re doing in an older home (because a lot of us are living in houses that have some… character).
I’ve put together this cheat sheet so you have somewhere to start when something goes sideways. Save it, screenshot it, stick it on your fridge. You’ll thank yourself later.
Plumbing
Bellingham’s older housing stock means older pipes — and older pipes mean surprises. Whether it’s a slow leak under the sink, a water heater that’s finally given up, or a full-on burst pipe situation, you want someone local who knows the territory.
Favinger Plumbing One of the most established names in Bellingham plumbing, Favinger has been part of the local scene since 1989. They handle everything from faucet repairs and drain cleaning to full repiping and new construction. Licensed, bonded, and insured.

Hollingsworth Plumbing A family-owned, locally operated outfit that specifically serves residential customers throughout Bellingham and Whatcom County. They’re known for fair pricing and quality work on everything from water heaters to clogged drains — and they service all Bellingham neighborhoods as well as Lynden, Blaine, and Ferndale.
Walker Plumbing Josh Walker has been plumbing in Whatcom County since 2013 and runs a tight, locally owned operation. He specializes in remodels, hot water tanks, tankless systems, and toilet installs. A good call for residential work where you want someone who actually picks up the phone.
Pro tip: Don’t wait until something is actively flooding to find a plumber. Whatcom County winters are rough on pipes, especially if your home has crawl space plumbing. Have a name in your phone before you need it.
Electricians
Electrical issues are not the place to DIY unless you really know what you’re doing. Between knob-and-tube wiring in some of Bellingham’s older homes and the general dampness that comes with living in the Pacific Northwest, electrical problems here can get complicated fast.
Old Town Electric A locally owned, union-affiliated company with over 35 years of combined experience. They specialize in residential and commercial remodels, troubleshooting, panel upgrades, EV chargers, generators, and hot tub hookups. Licensed, bonded, and they offer a 1-year labor warranty. One of the more well-reviewed local electricians on Nextdoor and Google.

Mt. Baker Electric Locally owned and run by Miles Freelan and Fernando Mago, Mt. Baker Electric has built a strong reputation specifically for working on older Bellingham homes — including knob-and-tube rewiring. Licensed, bonded, affordable, and frequently praised for not pushing unnecessary work.
Pro Circuit Electrical Over 25 years of experience serving Bellingham and Whatcom County. They offer free same-day estimates, a 24-hour turnaround on assessments, and discounts for seniors, veterans, and first responders. Good option for panel upgrades, generator installs, and Starlink setup.
Pro tip: If you’re buying a home in Bellingham, always get a separate electrical inspection — not just the general home inspection. It’s worth every penny, especially in older neighborhoods like Columbia, Sunnyland, and Fairhaven.
HVAC (Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning)
This is the one that really stings when it fails. Bellingham winters are cold and damp, and while we don’t get the brutal freezes of eastern Washington, going without heat for a few days is miserable. Our summers are also getting warmer, which means more people are finally investing in cooling systems too.
Barron Heating AC Electrical & Plumbing The biggest local name in HVAC, and for good reason. A four-generation family business based in Ferndale and serving all of Bellingham and Northwest Washington since 1972. They handle heating, cooling, heat pumps, ductless systems, fireplaces, plumbing, and electrical. They’re open 24 hours, which is exactly what you want when your furnace goes out at midnight in January.

- Open 24 hours, 7 days a week

Feller Heating & Air Conditioning A Bellingham institution since 1979, Feller focuses on peace of mind and client satisfaction. They fabricate their own sheet metal in-house and serve both residential and commercial clients. Known for Daikin ductless heat pumps and Coleman furnaces.
Pro tip: Schedule your furnace tune-up in September, not November. Every HVAC company in town gets slammed the moment the first cold front rolls in, and you’ll wait weeks for a non-emergency call.
Handymen & General Repairs
Not every problem needs a specialist. A good local handyman is honestly one of the most valuable relationships a Bellingham homeowner can have. Leaky gutters, a door that won’t close right, deck boards that need replacing, a bathroom fan that’s been rattling for two years — these are handyman jobs, and they pile up fast if you let them.
LJ’s Handyman Service Family-owned and locally operated since 2008, LJ’s has grown from a small handyman service into a full general contracting operation serving Whatcom, Skagit, and Island Counties. They handle remodeling, new construction, finish carpentry, decks, fencing, siding, and rot repair — both residential and commercial.

The Handyman Bellingham, founded by Solomon Falk in 2022, this locally owned operation has quickly built a solid reputation for honest, professional, and punctual service. Good for property maintenance, homeowner projects, and realtor punch lists. Available seven days a week.

General Contractors & Larger Renovations
If you’re tackling something bigger — a bathroom remodel, an addition, a full kitchen renovation — you need a licensed general contractor. Bellingham has a solid pool of local contractors who’ve been doing this work for years and know local permitting, building codes, and the quirks of construction in the Pacific Northwest.
What to look for: A Washington state contractor license (verify free at lni.wa.gov), proof of insurance, a clear written contract with a timeline and payment milestones, and references from actual local jobs.
Pro tip: Permits exist for a reason, and Whatcom County building inspectors are not lenient. Any contractor who suggests skipping permits on work that requires them is waving a red flag. Unpermitted work becomes your problem when it’s time to sell.
A Few General Rules for Hiring Locally in Bellingham
Get at least two quotes. Even if you trust someone, knowing the going rate for a job protects you and keeps everyone honest.
Check the L&I contractor lookup. Washington’s Department of Labor & Industries has a free online tool at lni.wa.gov to verify any contractor’s license and insurance status. Takes two minutes.
Nextdoor and local Facebook groups are your friends. The Bellingham community is tight-knit and people are not shy about sharing both good and bad experiences with local contractors.
Support local, independent businesses over big national chains. When your money goes to a local plumber or electrician, it stays in Bellingham. These are your neighbors, and they tend to take their reputation a lot more seriously than a franchise does.
Know a local contractor, plumber, electrician, or handyman you swear by? Drop their name in the comments or submit them to the Hey Bellingham directory so other locals can find them too.
